Bio-Steril is a Contract Manufacturing Organisation (CMO), specialising in primary and secondary packaging and steam sterilisation. With over 20 years of experience in steam sterilisation, the company is committed to providing a consistently high-quality service.
For CMOs like Bio-Steril, having a robust contamination control strategy in place is essential. Contamination can have serious consequences, from ruined batches and reduced product yield to reputational damage and, most importantly, risks to patient health and safety.
With contamination control a key priority, Bio-Steril made the decision to move away from traditional sticky peel-off mats and switch to Dycem Contamination Control mats.
CHALLENGE
Particulate contamination, including dust, is something Bio-Steril are continually looking to control within their ISO 7 and ISO 8 environments.
Previously, they relied on traditional peel-off sticky mats to help control foot and wheel-borne contamination. However, they found that these generated significant waste and also presented safety risks.
Bio-Steril tried several different brands of peel-off mats, as well as different methods of securing them to the floor within their controlled areas, but without success. They therefore began looking for a more effective and reliable alternative.
SOLUTION
Bio-Steril began searching online for an alternative when they came across Dycem. Their decision was driven by three key priorities: improving contamination control, reducing costs and supporting the company’s sustainability goals.
Dycem CleanZone was installed at key locations across the site to help control foot and wheel-borne contamination. Unlike traditional peel-off mats, CleanZone provides a reusable solution, proven to capture and retain up to 99.9% of contamination from shoes and wheels.
With a typical lifespan of 3–5 years, CleanZone is designed for long-term use and is simple to clean and maintain as part of Bio-Steril’s regular cleaning procedures.

RESULTS
Since introducing Dycem CleanZone, the team has reported better control of dust carried on footwear into their controlled areas.
The change has also addressed some of the practical issues experienced with peel-off mats, providing a more permanent solution that has met expectations for contamination control, safety and appearance, while reducing reliance on disposable materials.
“The results have met our expectations. In addition to the visual appearance and improved safety, it has been a real benefit for us. We now have better control of dust carried on footwear.”
